Approved Designated Learning Institution strategy ensures students can safely pursue their education in person at Trent

New and returning international students currently enrolled in courses are now able to enter Canada to study at the University, following approval of Trent’s Designated Learning Institution (DLI) strategy by the Ministry of Colleges and Universities.

Trent is just one of 11 institutions in Ontario currently with an approved plan to allow international students to campus amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are excited to be among the first institutions in the province to welcome international students,” said Glennice Burns, associate vice president of International at Trent. “Our students from around the globe contribute so much to our campuses and surrounding communities.”

Speaking of working with the Ministry to create a safe return to campus plan for international students, Ms. Burns added: “This was something that was at our fingertips and we immediately responded to the opportunity to submit a document to the ministry. With the health and safety of our communities as our top priorities, we also worked closely with Peterborough Public Health on our plan to ensure we were putting all necessary protocols in place.”

Under the plan, students are only able to enter Canada to study at Trent if they currently hold a valid study permit or letter of introduction and are asymptomatic. All international students are required to quarantine for 14 days upon arrival. Students will be picked up at the airport and must adhere to safety measures, including masking and physical distancing.

Students will also be required to sign a verification confirming they will follow protocols set by the Government of Ontario and Trent University. In addition, they must download and use the COVID Alert app and do daily check-ins on their own health.

Trent will be checking in on students during their quarantine period and Peterborough Public Health will be providing a community paramedic team to do testing on campus so students do not have to leave their rooms.

If you are an international student who is currently enrolled in courses and would like to travel to Canada to study at Trent, please get in touch with Trent International at international@trentu.ca.
