Award-Winning Author, Historian & Trent Alumnus Dr. Tim Cook ‘90 to Speak at Peterborough’s Market Hall
Public lecture part of Lady Eaton College 50th Anniversary and Trent University Alumni in Residence program
Trent alumnus and award-winning historian Dr. Tim Cook '90 will return to Trent University as part of the University’s Alumni in Residence program and in celebration of Lady Eaton College’s 50th Anniversary celebrations and will present a lecture at Market Hall on January 30 at 7:00 p.m.
Dr. Cook's lecture, The Legacy of Canada's Great War, will examine the multiple legacies of the Great War of 1914-1918 and its enduring impact on Canadian politics, society, identity, and culture. He will also explore how the war, and the sacrifice of lives, continue to haunt Canada and much of the world.
“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Tim Cook as the Lady Eaton College 50th Anniversary Alumni-in-Residence,” says college principal Dr. Christine Freeman-Roth. “We have a full line up of events for Tim to interact with students, including a fireside career chat and a special behind the scenes visit to the Peterborough Armory, along with his lecture at Market Hall for the broader Peterborough community.”
Dr. Cook is a historian at the Canadian War Museum (CWM). He was the curator for the museum’s First World War permanent gallery, which has been visited by an estimated 7 million visitors since 2005. He has also curated numerous temporary, travelling and digital exhibitions, including Victory 1918, a current CWM exhibit focusing on Canada and the Hundred Days campaign. Dr. Cook is the author of 11 books, including the #1 best-seller Vimy: The Battle and the Legend. He has won the C.P. Stacey Prize for Military History (twice), the Ottawa Book Award (twice), the RBC Taylor Prize for Literary Non-Fiction, and the J.W. Dafoe Book Prize (twice). His latest book is The Secret History of Soldiers: How Canadians Survived the Great War (2018).
In 2012, Dr. Cook was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal for his contributions to Canadian history. He received the Governor General’s History Award (The Pierre Berton Award) in 2013. He is a frequent commentator in the media and is a Member of the Order of Canada.
The Alumni in Residence program is a partnership between Trent University Alumni Engagement and Services and the Trent University Colleges. The program brings distinguished alumni to the University to stay in the Colleges and to interact with students. Alumni-in-Residence deliver lectures, take part in panel discussions and classroom visits, and find other unique ways to participate with campus communities.
