Tobogganing, hockey sticks, chariots and maple taffy. Trent students know how to celebrate winter in style. The Trent Central Student Association (TCSA) in collaboration with the Lady Eaton, Champlain, Otonabee and Peter Gzowski Colleges, ran Trent University’s first-ever Frost Week from January 13 to 20, 2012.

Frost Week was an idea of student Dani Dhiwayo, vice-president of membership services for the TCSA, who approached each college to host an event that would energize the student body. The Comedy Show, the Chariot Race, the East Bank vs. West Bank Hockey Game, the “Milk” Run and the Frost Week Formal became the 2012 Frost Week events.

The Comedy Show featured the Second City Conservatory Troupe, who performed to a full house at the Wenjack Theatre and received a standing ovation at the end of the night. Performers Jordan Boyes and Benjamin Ball were two Trent alumni in the touring comedy troupe.

The Chariot Race was a hard-fought battle where Champlain College claimed the inaugural title and over 500 students crowded into the Evinrude Centre for the very close East Bank versus West Bank Hockey Game. West Bank dominated in the beginning, but East Bank came out on top.

Champlain College hosted its famous Milk Run on the drumlin. Many came out to toboggan and enjoy chocolate with homemade maple taffy while witnessing the hilarity. The Milk Run itself entails chugging milk and then going down the steep drumlin as fast as you can without spilling any milk. In the end, the Otonabee College team won the Milk Run championship for Frost Week 2012.

For the finish, hundreds of students dressed up and came out for a delicious buffet dinner at the Frost Week Formal on Friday night at The Venue downtown. Prizes were given out to individuals and colleges for their participation throughout the week.

All in all, the first-ever Frost Week at Trent was a big success; it generated excitement for students coming back from holiday breaks. The reception was great and Trent looks forward to what the future holds for Frost Week.
