Program Requirements

Note: New Degree Requirements (Starting 2015-2016)

We have changed the degree requirements to allow students more flexibility and choice with their courses. If you have any questions related to your degree, contact the Gender and Women's Studies Department Chair: Kelly McGuire, kellymcguire@trentu.ca).

Students following Gender and Women’s Studies program requirements prior to 2015-16 are not required to take WMST 3031H Doing Feminist Research.
Students in the Honours program who declared their major in Gender and Women’s Studies prior to 2015-16 can substitute 4995Y (formerly required) with 1.0 WMST credit from the following list: WMST 4250H, 4431H, 4796H, 4881H, 4990H, 4995Y. Check the timetable for which of these courses will be offered this year: http://www.trentu.ca/timetable/

Bachelor of Arts in Gender and Women's Studies

The single-major Honours program 

20.0 credits including the following:

  • At least 9 credits in Gender and Women’s Studies, including:
    • 3.0 WMST credits consisting of WMST 1001H and 1002H (or1000Y), 2141H and 2151H (or 2040Y), and 3021H and 3031H (or 3020Y)
    • 1.0 WMST credit from WMST 4250H, 4431H, 4796H, 4881H, 4990H, or 4995Y
    • 1.0 WMST credit at the 3000 level or beyond in addition to the above
    • 1.0 WMST credit at the 4000 level or beyond in addition to the above
    • 3.0 WMST credits in addition to the above, at least 1.5 beyond the 2000-level

The joint-major Honours program 

20.0 credits including the following:

  • At least 7 credits in Gender and Women’s Studies, including:
    • 3.0 WMST credits consisting of WMST 1001H and 1002H (or 1000Y), 2141H and 2151H (or 2040Y), 3021H and 3031H (or 3020Y)
    • 1.0 WMST credit from WMST 4250H, 4431H, 4796H, 4881H, 4990H, or 4995Y
    • 1.0 WMST credit at the 3000 level or beyond in addition to the above
    • 2.0 WMST credits in addition to the above

The single-major General program

15.0 credits including the following:

  • At least 6 credits in Gender and Women’s Studies, including:
    • 3.0 WMST credits consisting of WMST 1001H and 1002H (or 1000Y), 2141H and 2151H (or 2040Y), 3021H and 3031H (or 3020Y)
    • 1.0 WMST credit at the 3000 level or beyond in addition to the above
    • 2.0 WMST credits in addition to the above

The joint-major General program

15.0 credits including the following:

  • At least 5 credits in Gender and Women’s Studies, including:
    • 3.0 WMST credits consisting of WMST 1001H and 1002H (or 1000Y), 2141H and 2151H (or 2040Y), 3021H and 3031H (or 3020Y)
    • 2.0 WMST credits in addition to the above

The minor in Gender and Women's Studies 

Consists of the following 5.0 credits:

  • 3.0 WMST credits consisting of WMST 1001H and 1002H (or 1000Y), 2141H and 2151H (or 2040Y), 3021H and 3031H (or 3020Y)
  • 2.0 WMST credits in addition to the above

Note for Gender & Women's Studies Majors

  • See Degree Requirements in the Calendar for requirements which apply to all undergraduate degree programs.
  • The same course may not simultaneously satisfy the requirements of both programs in a joint-major degree. 
  • No more than one credit from reading courses may count towards the number of Gender and Women’s Studies credits required for the single-major and joint-major General degree; no more than two credits from reading courses may count towards the single-major and joint-major Honours degrees.
