Learn More About First Year in Gender & Women's Studies

Program Requirements in First Year

Special Note:

We run two different sections of our first year courses: sections A and R. Both sections feature one two-hour lecture weekly. Section A also offers an in-class tutorial (or seminar), while section R offers an online tutorial (or seminar). Students wanting to take section A (WMST 1001H-A and WMST 1002H-A) must register for the LECTURE and also ONE SEMINAR. Students wanting to take section R (WMST 1001H-R and WMST 1002H-R) sign up for the lecture only, since the one-hour seminar in this section is delivered online. Both sections of this course are comprised of 3 contact hours weekly.

WMST 1001H – Thinking Gender:  An Introduction to Gender

An introduction to key concepts, issues, and themes informing the field of gender and women's studies.  We challenge many taken-for-granted assumptions about gender relations, feminism, and human inequalities, and examine the social construction of sex and gender in relation to other categories such as "race", class, disability, and sexuality.  Excludes WMST 1000Y (100).

WMST 1002H –  Gender Matters:  Issues and Contexts

WINTER PTBO (Section A) - Instructor: TBA

WINTER PTBO (Section R) - Instructor: TBA

Considers gender, sex, and bodies in relation to contemporary challenges facing our world, both in North America and abroad.  Through issues including media, popular culture, violence, sexuality, health, poverty, and globalization, we explore diverse women's experiences and gender relations, and evaluate multiple pathways towards gender and economic justice for everyone.  Excludes WMST 1000Y (100)
