Au Pair

Enjoy taking care of kids and want to learn a new language/culture in a budget friendly way?

Who can au pair?

This is typically done by younger students (19-25) that wish to either live abroad or learn a language affordably.

What is an au pair agreement?

Normally, the arrangement between an au pair and a host family is that the au pair will take care of a child (pick them up from school, cook dinner, put them to bed etc.) as well as some light cleaning (vacuuming, folding clothes...) in exchange for free rent, free meals and pocket money each week (100 Euro or more depending on the country). The au pair will also typically attend classes during the week and have time to explore the surrounding area on the weekend (depending on the arrangement).

What is the purpose of an au pair?

The goal of becoming an au pair is to explore abroad and exchange cultures (whether that be language or other aspects).

How do I get started?

In order for someone to become involved with au pairing, they can use free or paid organizations that will match them with a family that shares their interests and will work for them. Arrangements can last from a month to a year. The advantage of working with a paid organization is that they will have the power to match an au pair with a new family incase there are any issues.

Here is a list of websites incase you are interested in exploring more about au pairing.

Note to students*

The Trent Study Abroad Department advises students to thoroughly research organizations and to verify the terms and conditions of the agreement before participating. The Department invites you to contact us if you are seeking any assistance with your research.

Please note that Trent will not be held responsible for any issues relating to student participation within these organizations and the participation of an educational institution or employer in this event does not imply or reflect agreement or endorsement by Trent University of their views or policies, products, labour practices or services.
