FRENCH PLACEMENT TESTING for fall-winter 2026 registrations will open in June. It is highly recommended that students plan ahead and take the placement test early in their planning process.
IMPORTANT: Students who have completed 4U (Grade 12) French in high school do not need to take a placement test and may enroll directly in 1101H and 1102H.
The French placement test is designed for students who are planning to take their first Trent French language course if they have not taken FREN 4U (grade 12) in highschool.
The test currently consists of a brief oral interview with a French instructor to confirm the appropriate placement.
ORAL INTERVIEW
1. Please be sure to book the oral portion of your testing at the Oral Placement Interview Booking Page.
Appointments will be 5-10 minutes, conducted on Zoom – a link will be emailed to you once you make a booking.
Availability: Check dates according to the Oral Placement Interview Booking Page
If you are unable to schedule 10 minutes in this time block, please be in touch and we will try to accommodate. At least 12 hours notice is required to book an appointment.
2. After the interview, you will be advised of the course most suited to your proficiency level. For most courses, you will need to submit a pre-requisite waiver request for the course, noting placement test in the comments field. You can find that form under the academics tab in the mytrent portal. Once the request is received and our staff had time to approve it, you will receive an email letting you know you can go ahead and register. If you have been placed in a Microcredential course, you can register for those courses through Careerspace.
