Major Research Paper - Current Opportunities

Project 1

Supervisor: Dr. Arun Moorthy

Forensic technologists and scientists often have to make tough decisions with limited information. At the Computational Research Applied to Forensic Technology and Sciences (CRAFTS) Lab, we develop and evaluate computer models, algorithms, and software tools to assist forensic scientists in understanding their data and making informed choices. We are a diverse team that values both creativity and precision in our research, aiming to discover new scientific insights and develop practical software tools. Some forensic application areas include interpretation of chemical measurements (e.g., EI-MS, DART-MS, FT-IR), evaluation of physical evidence (e.g., fingerprints, documents), general data science (e.g. pattern recognition, database building and searching), and mathematical modeling and simulation (e.g., predicting crime hot spots). For more information about the CRAFTS Lab, please visit here.

As an MRP student trainee in the CRAFTS lab, you will work with Dr. Arun Moorthy to (i) identify an open problem in forensic science, (ii) connect with potential collaborators (if necessary), (iii) iteratively generate, implement and evaluate potential solutions to the problem, and (iv) disseminate solutions with the relevant community as one or more research papers and presentation. The goal in the CRAFTS lab is for trainees to have developed highly valued skills in computing and critical analysis that allow them to enter careers at the intersection of forensic science and data science.

If you would like to discuss this opportunity with Professor Moorthy, please contact him at arunmoorthy@trentu.ca.
