ERSC 3240H: Environmental Issues in the Mediterranean Marine System (Canceled for SU2020)

Course Description
The Mediterranean Sea is one of the most complex marine ecosystems, characterized by a rich and diverse biota. However, human-driven pressures currently affect its integrity, resulting in water shortage, habitat loss, and chemical pollution. This field course introduces students to these environmental challenges in the coastal southeastern area of France (Northwestern Mediterranean Sea). The course will be highly oceanography-focused, as it is based out of the Mediterranean Institute of Oceanography (MIO) and University of Toulon and in partnership with IFREMER (French Research Institute for the Exploitation of the Oceans).
Course Costs
Tuition fee plus additional fees of $800 per student. Fees will cover residence, transportation costs around Toulon-Marseille and field course components (e.g., oceanographic boats, sampling and analysis). Students will be responsible for organizing their own flights to/from Marseille at their own cost and food.
Course Prerequisites
ERSC 1010H, 70% or higher in either ERSC 2220H, ERSC 2230H or CHEM3610 or permission of instructor.

ERSC 3220H: Community-Engaged Lacustrine Shoreline Assessment and Monitoring (Sc) (Canceled for SU2020)

Course Description
A field course covering approaches and methods for the assessment of lacustrine shorelines in collaboration with property owners.
Collaborative shoreline assessment approaches and methods, including:

Science and best practices of shoreline assessment

Field skills for shoreline assessment and analytical tools

Application of results in shoreline management

Landowner stewardship options and perspectives

Legal and policy framework for shoreline management
This is an experiential learning course. Students learn about shoreline assessment directly through field instruction, classroom lectures, and application on lakes, undertaken collaboratively with property owners.
Course Costs
Course tuition, plus a maximum supplementary fee of $600 for transportation, equipment, accommodation, and meals.

SAFS 4101H: Agroecological Learning and Practice (Canceled for SU2020)

Course Description
This two-week intensive course explores and scrutinizes agroecology through a survey of the relevant literature, guest expert speakers and colloquia, practical agroecological planning, and fieldwork. Provides opportunities for a broad engagement with agroecological scholarship, as well as opportunities to apply this knowledge and problem-solve within the specific contexts of the Peterborough and Kawartha region and the campus of Trent University.
Course Costs
Course tuition, plus a course supplementary fee of $30 to pay for transportation and guest speakers. Students are responsible for paying for meals and transportation to/from Trent campus.

ERSC-IDST 3230H: Environmental Problems and Solutions in Small Island Developing States - A Field Course (Sc depending upon topic)

Course Dates
Online component during the Fall term and field component over the October reading week at the Bellairs Research Institute in Barabados.
Course Description
Barbados, like many islands in the West Indies, is facing a variety of challenges, such as overfishing, pollution, and loss of coral reefs and other habitats. This course, which has a one-week field component and an online component, introduces students to the challenges faced by Barbados and other islands, as well as potential solutions. The default credit for the course is ERSC, but students may take the course as an ERST credit provided this request is made to the instructor prior to the start of the course.
Course Costs
Tuition, plus a supplementary fee of $950 for accommodation and meals in Barbados. Plus students are responsible for arranging and paying for their own flights to and from Barbados.
Course Prerequisites
ERSC 2230H or ERST-CAST 2520H or IDST 2000Y, or permission of the instructor.
