What is Equity?

“We respectfully acknowledge that we are on the treaty and traditional territory of the Michi Saagiig Anishinaabeg. We offer our gratitude to the First Peoples for their care for, and teachings about, our earth and our relations. May we honour those teachings.”

Trent University is committed to creating opportunities for all community members to develop and flourish as individuals and global citizens (Trent’s Vision Statement, 2010). Through this role, our goals are for equity-deserving campus community members to feel included, inspired, safe, supported and celebrated. The University seeks to actively promote an accessible, equitable and inclusive campus society that reflects and embraces the diversity of its occupants guided by human rights principles and practice, free from discrimination.

As an institution we stand in allyship and solidarity with members of indigenous communities and marginalized groups, including racialized persons, members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, persons with an immigration background, persons with visible and invisible disabilities. We do not condone violence in the form of direct, systemic and cultural oppression and uphold our shared social contract premised on the values of dignity and respect. Our EDI framework strives for inclusive excellence through adopting a rights-based approach, shaping data-driven, informed policies through innovative research, education and continuous learning and unlearning.

Increasingly on the global and national front, we are witnessing an increase in hate ideology and hate crime. 2SLGBTQIA+ rights are increasingly challenged and incidents of anti-Black and anti-Indigenous racism and gender-based violence are prevalent. Now, more than ever we affirm our commitment to supporting our students, colleagues, and all vulnerable communities.

We value the right to function, teach, learn, research, and engage in assenting and dissenting discourse in safety and with integrity. We extend our condolences to our international staff and student community who bear the burden of natural disasters, war, economic and social displacement.

Employment Equity at Trent University

Trent University affirms its commitment to establishing equal opportunities of employment. The University strives to create an environment that is free of discrimination. The University's goal is to achieve and maintain a representative workforce through the full participation of groups which are found to be underrepresented, especially women, persons with disabilities, visible minorities, and aboriginal peoples. The University seeks to identify and remove discriminatory barriers in employment areas including recruitment, hiring, training and promotion practices. Where necessary, the University will develop proactive employment equity measures with the concurrence of the Ontario Human Rights Commission, the bargaining units, and the Ministry of Colleges and Universities.

Employment Equity Survey (Previously Employment Equity Questionnaire)

The Department of Human Resources has launched the Employment Equity module in VIP. EHRO joins with the department of Human Resources in encouraging all employees to complete the survey, as the collection of baseline data is crucial in advancing Trent’s ongoing equity, diversity and inclusion efforts. Please be assured that the confidential survey data collected will be stored securely by the Department of Human Resources and only released or reported in an aggregate and anonymous basis.

To access the survey, log in to MyTrent, then click on the VIP icon found on the main toolbar. You will be prompted to fill out the survey automatically upon clicking on “My File” in your employee portal. You may opt out of answering specific items within the survey. You may review/update your survey response at any time by clicking on “My File” -- “Employment Equity Survey”. Additional VIP training/access instructions can be found on the HR website.

We thank you in advance for participating. If you have any questions about the survey, please contact humanresources@trentu.ca.
