Elementary Teachers’ Federation Award
Donated by the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario to a student:
- who is enrolled in the Primary/Junior or Junior/Intermediate program;
- who demonstrates academic excellence in courses;
- who demonstrates exemplary teaching practices in practicum placements;
- who demonstrates initiative to broaden personal experience in educational culture;
- who demonstrates a commitment to social justice and equity that is in keeping with objectives of the ETFO.
The recipient is recommended by both the practicum supervisor and an associate teacher, in writing, outlining how, in their opinion, the candidate meets the above criteria.
Dorothy Greenley Special Education Scholarship
Established in memory of Dorothy (Do) Greenley. To be awarded to a high attaining Bachelor of Education student in courses such as EDUC 4133H/4233H “Supporting Literacy and Learners with Special Needs” and who demonstrates the qualities and characteristics of an exceptional teacher for students with special needs.
Innovation in Teaching Prize
The Innovation in Teaching Prize will be awarded to a candidate in each of the following: Primary/Junior division; Intermediate/Senior division; and Part-Time program (final year). Based on innovation in teaching and learning demonstrated in classroom placement.
Margaret Lightbody Prize
Awarded to a student with Mathematics as an elected teaching subject, who has demonstrated exceptional skill, enthusiasm and promise in classroom teaching, and who maintained at least a B- average in mathematics courses. Established in honour of Margaret Lightbody (’64), a local area retired Mathematics teacher who has had a remarkable impact on the lives of her students.
Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association Award
Donated by the Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association to a student:
- is graduating from an Ontario publicly-funded Faculty of Education program, either French or English, either consecutive or concurrent;
- who has completed one or more of the pre-service religion courses preparing candidates to teach in Ontario Catholic schools: for example, Teaching in Roman Catholic Separate Schools, Foundations in Catholic Education, Religion as a Teachable;
- recommended demonstrated academic excellence;
- has approval signature of the religion course Director/Professor/local Teacher Education Liaison Committee representative;
- is attempting to secure a teaching position that would make her or him an OECTA member.
Ontario Modern Language Teachers’ Association Award (Helen G. Mitchell Award)
Donated annually, by the Ontario Modern Language Teachers’ Association, to a graduating student who demonstrates excellence in the academic program and the practicum, and applies effective second language methodologies which lead to success in the classroom. Plaque and Certificate of Recognition.
Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation Award
Donated by the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation to a student who:
- is enrolled in the Intermediate/Senior division program
- has applied for the award
- has shown a clear understanding and empathy for the values of unionism
- intends to pursue a job with a public secondary school board, and who best exemplifies the criteria below (listed in order of importance):
- is an advocate for unionism and related values;
- has demonstrated political or social activism that promotes the professional nature of teaching;
- has shown leadership by supporting and advocating for fellow Teacher Candidates;
- has shown leadership in organization of events which benefit fellow Teacher Candidates;
- has demonstrated a high degree of professional competence;
- is attempting to secure a teaching position that would make him/her an OSSTF/FEESO member.

Primary/Junior Mathematics Award
- awarded to a Primary/Junior Teacher Candidate who demonstrated excellence in mathematics
- Teacher Candidate has prepared and implemented outstanding lessons both with young children and with peers in the program
- the recipient also demonstrated innovation in teaching and through contributions to the mathematics course.
Responding to Diversity Prize
Awarded to a second year teacher candidate who has demonstrated commitment and an exemplary ability to respond to diverse learning/learners.
Science Teachers’ Association of Ontario Award
- 3 awards for pre-service science candidates: one Primary/Junior, one Junior/Intermediate, one Intermediate/Senior;
- who demonstrates exemplary commitment to their pre-service science program as well as providing an effective learning environment for their students during their practicum sessions in schools;
- required to submit a curriculum project, or something suitable for inclusion on the STAO website, or a modest article for publication in the Crucible or Elements, STAO’s bi-monthly publication.
Trent Education Student Award
Donated to a teacher candidate who has made an outstanding and continuous contribution to student life.
