Teaching Internationally

Unavailable for 2025-2026

Looking to gain experience teaching internationally? Offered to year one and two Trent Bachelor of Education teacher candidates, these unique opportunities are part of the programs' Alternative Settings Placement. It should be noted that not all of these placements run every year. As with most Alternative Settings Placements, these typically take place in May, following practicum.

For more information about these opportunities, please contact Professor and ASP Coordinator Dr. Luigi Iannacci: luigiiannacci@trentu.ca

Teaching in Cambodia

This is an opportunity to support English Language Learning and the development of pedagogy and learning materials in Cambodia. The atrocities of the Khmer Rouge left a generation without education and this has made the country one of the poorest in the world. Education is one of the keys to a better future. Teachers and students are anxious to learn English but lack the professional development and resources for effective instruction.

Candidates will be selected by application, where successful applicants will be expected to work with School of Education Faculty in preparation for the practicum.

Teaching in Brazil

This unique ASP provided two teacher candidates the opportunity to teach English to young children who are students at Maple Bear Elementary School in Salvador, Brazil. This school is a K to 3 school and as such, this ASP is designed for Trent University P/J Teacher Candidates in their first or second year. The Maple Bear School in Salvador is a bilingual school. The Maple Bear international network of schools are focused on bilingual education for students. As such Portuguese and English are the languages of instruction in Salvador, Brazil where the school is located. Teacher Candidates will be supporting students learning English within this bilingual learning environment.

Wuxi Foreign Language School

Located in China, the Wuxi Foreign Language School is an independent school, implementing both Cambridge Curriculum K-12 (English) and Chinese Curriculum K-12 (Mandarin). This  Alternative Settings Placement is looking for Teacher Candidates who are interested in teaching English to students across a number of grade levels, focusing on literacy and critical thinking. Teacher candidates selected to participate in this ASP will gain invaluable experience working with students learning English as a second language. This ASP is open to year one and two teacher candidates.
