Headshot of Dr. James Onusko
Words of welcome from Champlain principal Dr. James Onusko.

Hey, I’m Dr. James Onusko, principal of Champlain College.

An Albertan originally, I am now a long-time Peterborough resident – having moved here with my wife and 2 young children in 2008 to do my PhD in Canadian Studies at Trent.

Since becoming Dr. Onusko, I have published several books and articles on the history of childhood, children and youth – my area of expertise. I have taught in many departments at Trent, including History and the Frost Centre for Canadian and Indigenous Studies. And I have had the privilege of becoming Principal of this great college since 2024.

As the second oldest college, Champlain is rich with tradition. We ask all new Champlainers to embrace these traditions, while also thinking about how they can contribute to creating new memories – not just for themselves, but for the entire “Chamily” - what we lovingly call our community made of students, staff, faculty and alumni.

Whether it’s dining together in gowns at the High Table Dinner, playing Bingo in the Great Hall, or enjoying sports and outdoor activities during Bon Temps – there is something for everyone.

In this college, we ask that you “DARE to be Champlain” – which means we encourage and support you to embrace the values of: Discovery, Adventure, Reflection and Engagement. These values are drivers both in the classroom, in the programming we offer here, and in life.

As principal, I am here to lead and guide you as you explore, navigate, and thrive during your time at Trent. As well, our college office team – including both professional staff and amazing student staff – are always here for you. From providing academic guidance, to hosting incredible events, to being a safe space to talk and connect.

At Champlain, your student experience is also enhanced through collaborations with our affiliated departments, which include: Trent International, the Trent School for the Environment, Political Studies, and Global Development and Justice.

Together, let’s live the Champlain motto and “Continue our Discoveries” as one.

Welcome to the Chamily!

Dr. James Onusko
