Course Overview
Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming the way we work, making AI literacy an essential skill across virtually every profession. This micro-credential is designed to bridge the gap between understanding AI concepts and applying them effectively in real-world workplace settings.
Through this fully online course, participants will develop practical, hands-on skills using Microsoft Copilot and other AI-powered tools embedded within Microsoft products. Rather than focusing on programming or building AI systems, the course emphasizes how to use AI strategically to enhance productivity, streamline workflows, improve decision-making, and create value in any role or industry.
By the end of the course, learners will be equipped to confidently integrate AI into their daily work, positioning themselves as adaptable professionals and strategic assets in an increasingly AI-driven workplace.

Duration: 5 weeks

Weekly Commitment: Approximately 3 hours per week
- 2 hours of asynchronous online learning
- 1 hour live online session:
- Thursdays 6-7pm (Fall Semester)
- Tuesdays 6-7pm (Winter Semester)

Module 1: AI Overview – Introduction to Copilot and Prompting for Productivity
Module 2: Enhancing Communication with Copilot in Outlook, Teams, and Word
Module 3: Data Analysis and Decision-Making with Copilot in Excel
Module 4: Process Improvement and Workflow Automation with Copilot
Module 5: Copilot Agents and Building an AI-Enabled Workplace
Assessment Requirements
To earn the micro-credential, participants must successfully complete:
Module Quizzes
- Online quizzes for each module
- Multiple attempts permitted
Practical Assignments
- Assignment 1: Using AI to introduce yourself
- Assignment 2: Using AI to solve a problem, documenting how you did it, and its impact
Badge Requirements
Participants must achieve a minimum score of 75% on the module quizzes and two assignments to earn the digital badge.
Admission Requirements
Prerequisites
Applicants should have:
- Experience through fourth-year business-related coursework, including marketing, business, or business tools courses; or relevant professional experience in marketing or business
- Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Google Docs, and Canva is beneficial, but not required.
Students must have:
- A Microsoft 365 Copilot (Premium) license for the duration of the course (8 weeks)
- If you are a Trent University staff member, manager approval is required before upgrading your Copilot license. Please consult the IT Department for assistance and information about Microsoft 365 Copilot licensing and pricing.
- If you are purchasing your own license, please review the available Copilot pricing plans for individuals to ensure you have the appropriate subscription for the duration of the course.
Tax Receipt Information
Students may be eligible to receive a T2202 Tuition and Enrolment Certificate if their micro-credential meets Canada Revenue Agency requirements.
To qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
- Be enrolled in a qualifying educational program that provides at least 12 hours of instruction within a calendar month.
- Pay a minimum course fee of $150.
- Not receive a grant, reimbursement, benefit, or allowance for the program from an arm’s length party that would make the program ineligible under CRA guidelines.
Earn a Digital Badge
Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive a verified digital badge that can be shared on LinkedIn, resumes, portfolios, and professional profiles.
