Applied Event Management

By completing an event and submitting your event plan with the help of a sponsor or supervisor, you can obtain this credential and showcase your practical experience. It can be used to enhance resumes and demonstrate to future employers that you have the soft skills that are commonly required. These include critical thinking and problem solving, attention to detail, communication skills, writing skills and ownership of an event.

Learning Outcomes:

Participants will demonstrate practical knowledge of:

  • Creating, planning, and designing an event
  • Communicating with stakeholders
  • Coordinating and marketing an event
  • Developing strategies to mitigate risk
  • Evaluating event effectiveness using data analysis
  • Conducting oneself in a professional manner

Required Steps:

1. Confirm details of the event. You must be the main lead and have ownership for the event.

2. Find a sponsor or supervisor, ideally a faculty or staff member.

3. Complete the Event Summary and agree it with your supervisor.

4. Apply for the micro-credential, with your supervisor's approval.

5. Create and submit the following documents:

  • Event summary
  • 2 event plans (initial and final plan)
  • Stakeholder information
  • Communication plan
  • Event budget plan
  • Data analysis plan
  • Data analysis results
  • Detailed event plan for day of the event
  • Evaluation of the event
  • Self-reflection of the event management experience

FAQs:

What experience do I need?

Students must have experience in managing events where they are the lead, and the supervisor must be confident that they can run the event they are going to use with minimal supervision.

Who can apply?

Ideally, students should be in their second year or later, where they have demonstrated that they are good at event planning.

How much time will it take for supervision?

Supervisors need to:

1. Approve the application.

2. Supervise the student running the event and get updates from the student.

3. Complete a survey to confirm the student has met the requirements.

It would take no more than 2 hours in supervision time.

Should student staff get paid for taking this micro-credential?

This is up to the supervisor. It is okay to pay staff to develop skills to enable them to do their jobs better and provide motivation by making it a recognized qualification.

How much extra work am I required to complete?

It would take about 3 hours to complete all the documentation, in addition to running the event.
