Advanced Financial Administration

Advanced Financial Administration for Nonprofits builds upon the foundational knowledge gained in Foundations of Financial Administration for Nonprofits, focusing on advanced concepts and specialized skills necessary for effective financial management within Nonprofit Organizations (NPOs). This course delves into financial capacity building, transparency practices, gifting and receipting principles, budgeting essentials, financial reporting, and preparation of the T3010 Registered Charity Information Return.

Course Objectives:

  • To enhance students' understanding of Financial Capacity Building and Transparency practices specific to Nonprofit Organizations, emphasizing strategies for sustainability and accountability.
  • To explore the Practices and Principles of Gifting and Receipting, ensuring compliance with Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) regulations and fostering donor relationships.
  • To equip students with essential skills in Budgeting, enabling effective financial planning and resource allocation within NPOs.
  • To emphasize Transparency and Accountability through comprehensive Financial Reporting practices tailored to the unique needs of NPOs.
  • To provide practical Tips and Strategies for preparing the T3010 Registered Charity Information Return, ensuring compliance and accuracy in reporting to CRA.

2. Understanding Gifting & Receipting: Practices & Principles

  • Regulations and guidelines for gifting and receipting in NPOs
  • Donor acknowledgment and receipt issuance processes

3. Budgeting Essentials for Nonprofit Organizations

  • Principles of budgeting and financial planning
  • Budget development processes and timelines
  • Monitoring and adjusting budgets for financial stability

4. Transparency & Accountability: Financial Reporting for Nonprofit Organizations

  • Types of financial reports and their purposes
  • Presentation of financial statements for NPOs
  • External audit considerations and best practices

5. Tips for Preparing Your T3010 Registered Charity Information Return

  • Overview of the T3010 form and reporting requirements
  • Common challenges and errors in reporting
  • Strategies for accurate and timely completion

Evaluation:

This course is a graded course where a complete or incomplete grade will be issued. To receive a Completion of this course, a student must:

  • Participate in online discussions.
  • Complete lesson quizzes, reflections, or case studies.

  • September 1 - September 28, 2026 (must be completed within 4 weeks)
  • January 4 - January 28, 2027 (must be completed within 4 weeks)

All the courses are delivered online and asynchronously to enable participants to complete the work in their own time.

Courses are competitively priced, and registrants may qualify for OSAP or the Canada Ontario Job Grant, which offers support for employers.

Prerequisites:

Successful completion of Foundations of Financial Administration for Nonprofits OR equivalent knowledge and experience in financial management within the nonprofit sector.
