Part 1 - Teaching English Language Learners (TELL)

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Many schools are populated with a student body comprised of English Language Learners from various cultural and linguistic backgrounds. TELL Part 1 offers teachers a better understanding of how to meet the growing needs of English Language Learners. 

Focusing on theories of second language acquisition, course participants will learn how to assess, accommodate and program for English as a Second Language (ESL) and English Language Development (ELD) students. As well, participants will gain an understanding of how to create a learning environment that fosters equity and inclusiveness. 

This course will appeal to those who wish to deepen their knowledge on English Language learning and who are looking for tools and resources to support ESL and ELD students in regular classroom settings.

Please note that this course was originally called ESL.

PREREQUISITES

(as required by OCT)

  • OCT Member in Good Standing or OCT applicant if new Ontario BEd graduate (Read more)
     
  • Your teacher education program coursework and practicum must be successfully completed before registration
     
  • Qualification in at least one teaching division (e.g., Primary, Junior, Intermediate or Senior division qualifications)

Part 2 - Teaching English Language Learners (TELL)

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Teaching English Language Learners Part 2 course is for teachers who want to extend their knowledge of teaching English Language Learners beyond the 'basics'. 

This course, taught by an English Language Learner Itinerant teacher, shares with you the tools, resources and strategies of a seasoned and experience teacher in the field.

PREREQUISITES

(as required by OCT)

  • OCT Member in Good Standing
     
  • Completion of Part 1
     
  • 194 days teaching experience completed before the course start date - days of teaching can only be counted after you become a certified teacher

If you have a Part 2 qualification visible on your OCT certificate, you don't need to send us verification of your teaching days.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Thinking of taking your Teaching English Language Learners Specialist? This course enables you to explore the aspects of teaching English Language Learners in which you are curious.

 Exploring alongside your colleagues, this course offers you the opportunity to delve deeper into content on teaching English Language Learners. You will build on your expertise through inquiry and collaborative practice.

PREREQUISITES

(as required by OCT)

  • OCT Member in Good Standing
     
  • Completion of Part 2
     
  • 388 days teaching experience completed before the course start date - days of teaching can only be counted after you become a certified teacher
     
  • Minimum 1 year experience in teaching English Language Learners - completed before the course start date
