Part 1 - Guidance and Career Education

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The primary purpose of Guidance and Career Education Part 1 is to provide candidates with the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills in the design, delivery and assessment of the Guidance program. 

The course is an introduction to basic counselling and communication skills, interpersonal and human relation skills and awareness of the legal and ethical responsibilities for guidance programs and counsellors. 

Additionally, it supports guidance and career education as being purposively embedded and infused within all teachers’ daily planning and instruction. 

PREREQUISITES

(as required by OCT)

  • OCT Member in Good Standing or OCT applicant if new Ontario BEd graduate (Read more)
     
  • Your teacher education program coursework and practicum must be successfully completed before registration

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is created to offer candidates the opportunity to further expand their understanding of career development and post-secondary pathways planning. 

The course places emphasis on essential Ministry documents and Ontario College of Teacher standards while presenting students with a variety of key resources connected to the important work of Guidance Counsellors as they prepare students for successful transitions throughout their school career.

Additionally, through Guidance Part 2 candidates will begin to develop an understanding of their role in supporting mental health best practices connected to key transition points and exposing students to the wide array of resources available to encourage thoughtful and self-reflective career pathway planning from kindergarten through to Grade 12. 

PREREQUISITES

(as required by OCT)

  • OCT Member in Good Standing
     
  • Completion of Part 1
     
  • 194 days teaching experience completed before the course start date - days of teaching can only be counted after you become a certified teacher

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Guidance and Career educators will have the opportunity to explore resources and develop a deeper understanding of school mental health while furthering their understanding of their leadership role in schools. 

Reviewing relevant government policies and board and school protocols, participants will build confidence in their ability to navigate various aspects of their work with a focus on school and student mental health and wellbeing. 

Recognizing the dynamic and distinct nature of individual school communities, educators in the course will identify areas of need in terms of personal professional knowledge and school/student support programming related to mental health, mental illness, and wellbeing. 

Additionally, through a curated list of key resources, they will build a toolkit to support the challenging, demanding, and rewarding work of Guidance and Career educators in schools.  

PREREQUISITES

  • OCT Member in Good Standing
     
  • Completion of Part 2
     
  • 388 days teaching experience completed before the course start date - days of teaching can only be counted after you become a certified teacher
     
  • Minimum 1 year experience in teaching Guidance and Career Education - completed before the course start date
