Why I chose Trent
I chose Trent because they accepted some of my transfer credits in place of the high school prerequisites.
My favourite place on campus
The Trent University wildlife sanctuary because it's pretty and nice to walk around.
What I like to do outside of Academics
Build Lego, read, write, and cook.
My thoughts on the challenges encountered by new transfer students
- Understanding transfer credits - the system automatically figures out what credits transfer over. However, since there's a limit to how many credits transfer, not all of the credits are looked at. For example, my Indigenous Studies course didn't appear, so I had to fill out a form to have it reviewed and transferred. But this process wasn't clear, so I almost re-took the Indigenous Course because I thought I had to.
- Adapting to the registration system - at Trent you manually have to choose individual classes, so it can be difficult to make a timetable without classes conflicting.
- Having to choose your courses for the entire year in the summer - this isn't the same for all post-secondary schools, so a lot of students aren't aware of this.
A service, resource, or tool that helped me navigate my first year or first semester
On the Trent website, there's a section that tells you what courses to pick for first year.
Academic Skills was also helpful for completing assignments. Even if the assignment itself wasn't "difficult," it was beneficial to have someone help you break up the assignment, organize yourself, and have a clear plan without feeling overwhelmed.
My one piece of advice for new transfer students
Don't be ashamed to ask for help and to utilize the resources that Trent offers, such as Academic skills.
