Document your Learning Journey
An e-book of one’s own is a simplified version of a learning practice called “Domain of One’s Own” which was in turn inspired by Virginia Woolf’s book “A Room of One’s Own”. Woolf’s book had the central premise that without the time, space, and resources to write, a woman cannot engage in free expression. We believe the same holds true for any student. Give a student the right space to work and they will be able to freely express themselves. One of the difficulties of a Domain of One’s Own (DoOO) is the high bar for digital fluency one must have to get started. Hence this simplified approach, an e-Book of One’s Own.
This practice will help you centre yourself in your learning. Rather than just submitting an assignment to a course dropbox and forgetting about it, you can put that assignment in your e-book, with all the others. We believe it will lead you to make more and deeper connections across your courses and over the years of your program. Plus, you will get to leave here with the book of your learning journey! It will help you learn more deeply and then help you kick off your career following your time here. This thing is doing double duty.

Course Requirements
Participants will:
- Participants will aim to complete 3 of 6 course “parts” per week for 2 weeks. This is all done asynchronously (on your own time) online.
- Learners will:
- Create an e-book.
- Post a goal setting page.
- Post reflections.
- Post some showcase work.
- Create a podcast, video, or graphic design piece.
- Do an accessibility check.
- Share their e-book to peers.

Program Details
The e-Book of One’s Own program is a dynamic experience crafted to leave participants with the ongoing book of their own “learning journey” which will foster digital literacy and deeper program learning. Immerse yourself in innovative concepts, videos, and engaging, non-disposable activities that will serve you during and after your time at Trent.
GOALS
The goal of this program is to provide students with the skills and abilities needed to document their learning journey in a digital space. This serves three main purposes:
- To increase digital fluency and learning skills.
- To deepen learning and make connections across courses by centering students in their own learning.
- To establish an e-book of one’s own that not only serves as a space to collect the products of learning, but also as a digital portfolio for future job searches.
BACKGROUND
Trent Online creates high quality online learning experiences for Trent students. One of the central tenets of good online learning is the development of learner community. What better way to establish community than by having students share the work that they are proud of with each other. in 2023, Trent University was given free single sign-on access by eCampusOntario to the e-book tool Pressbooks. Upon receiving this access, Trent Online saw it as an opportunity to simplify the practice known as a Domain of One’s Own. This practice, while extremely valuable, has quite a high entry bar for entry from a digital fluency standpoint. So, we’ve simplified it here for a more plug and play experience.
STRUCTURE OF PROGRAM
This course is an asynchronous online experience. Once a student has begun the course, it is suggested that the six parts are completed in two weeks (3 per week). Each part should take 1-2 hours. Here is the breakdown of topics:
