Teaching Awards:

• Symons Award for Excellence in Teaching (1997-98)

Dr. Deborah White was the first Sociology professor to receive Trent’s Symons Award for Excellence in Teaching. Prof. White teaches Introductory Sociology and Culture and Society, and her teaching areas also include social inequality, social policy, and science and technology studies. Her research efforts are in the study of institutional responses to sexual assault, particularly in the medical and legal context of assault, and in the role of forensic evidence in processing assault cases. Her research interests also include cultural regulation and popular culture, gender and regulation, and policy analysis. 

Prof. White believes Trent offers faculty and students conditions that promote good teaching and good learning. She sees Trent’s environment as a sharp contrast to her experience as a student at larger universities, and credits the small classes and ample opportunity for contact with students as reasons why Trent’s supportive faculty can provide excellence in teaching. 

Prof. White holds a Bachelor of Applied Arts in radio and television arts from Ryerson University, an M.A. in Sociology from the University of Toronto and a Ph.D. from Carleton.
