How did you become interested in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning?

I'm teaching-intensive faculty, which means I teach a higher-than-average load (7 courses). Due to the number of courses I teach each year, I thought it would be valuable to start researching in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

What keeps you engaged or motivates you in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning?

I’m motivated by the array of academic/professional backgrounds people have in SoTL. There is so much amazing research being conducted each year, which will be beneficial to my teaching going forward.

What projects are you currently working on or hope to work on in the near future?

Trent University Durham GTA Bioarchaeology Field School: This experiential learning opportunity creates a unique experience specific to this campus. Field schools are an important pedagogical activity in archaeology. They provide valuable opportunities for students to put the knowledge they acquire. My research will study the value of engaged learning in field schools. To achieve this, I’m using the bioarchaeology field school to collect initial information from students in the field school course. I'll be asking students to reflect on their experience during the field school to gain information about the efficacy of the teaching practices employed and the degree to which they can make connections between information taught in the classroom and knowledge gained in the field.
