How Provincial Residency Affects Tuition Fees

Tuition fees are assessed based on your domestic residency status or international immigration status. There are three residency statuses that impact tuition fees: Domestic Ontario, Domestic Out of Province and International.

For information concerning what determines your status as a Domestic Ontario student or Domestic Out of Province student, please see below.  The fee schedules provide information regarding your program’s tuition amounts based on your residency status.

Who is eligible for domestic Ontario residency status?

  • Students who are currently receiving full-time funding from the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) or have received full-time OSAP funding in the past 5 years while attending Trent University.
  • Dependent students whose parent’s primary residence is in Ontario
  • Independent students whose primary residence is in Ontario, and Ontario is the last province lived in for 12 months in a row prior to becoming a post-secondary student
  • Independent students whose spouse or common-law partner’s primary residence is in Ontario, and Ontario is the last province your spouse or common-law partner has lived in for 12 months in a row
  • Dependent students whose parents are recently deceased and at least one of your parents was residing permanently in Ontario at the time of death
  • Students in extended society care
  • Students who are the dependent of someone holding diplomatic status in Canada
  • Students who have been granted, or are the dependent of someone who has been granted protected person/refugee status

Where can I submit documentation for changes to my residency status?

You can complete the Residency Self-Identification:

  1. Login to the myTrent portal: mytrentlogin
  2. Navigate to the "Finances" tab and click on the Residency Self-Identification button
  3. Fill out the one-question form by selecting the statement that best describes you

After submission, your tuition charge will be automatically adjusted, pending the deadlines specified below.

Is there a deadline to submit documentation for changes to residency status?

Tuition adjustments related to changes in residency status will be processed for the current term only.  Retroactive changes will not be considered. Residency status change applications must be submitted via an online form by the deadlines below to be effective for the corresponding term.  Documentation provided after the deadlines will result in your residency status changing for the following term.
