Professional Years Application Details

Full details about admissions requirements and the application process for the Professional Years can be found in the Undergraduate Academic Calendar and by referring to the current Professional Years Admissions Package.

If you have any questions about the professional years, please do not hesitate to contact our department, via email or phone 705-748-1011 ext 7618.

Admission Cycle:

  • The online application opens January 1st, 2025 via the myTrent portal. (The BSW Professional Years Application link can be found under the Academics Tab)
  • The online application (via the Academics/Admissions section of the myTrent portal) closes at 11:59 pm, March 1 (there are no extensions).
  • All grades to be used to meet requirements for admissions to the Professional Years must be available by May 15.
  • There will be one applicant pool. On the online application form, students will indicate: “Peterborough campus only”, “Durham campus only”, “either campus prefer Peterborough”, or “either campus prefer Durham”. An "either campus" selection increases students' opportunities for an offer of admission.
  • Students will be charged a non-refundable $60 application fee to apply for the professional years.Your application is not considered complete until the payment is made. Payment details can be found in the Admissions Package.
  • Decisions will go out mid-June to students’ Trent University email address (@trentu.ca) only.
  • The deadline to accept will be noted in the offer of admissions email.
  • Offers of admission will indicate the student’s assigned campus. Students must attend the assigned campus for all required professional years courses.
  • Offers cannot be deferred (students would have to reapply).

Admission Details:

  • Admission will be limited and offered through a competitive process. There are a maximum of 30 full-time spaces available on each campus (60 spots per academic year) and 10 part-time spaces per campus (20 per academic year.)
  • Students applying to the BSW Professional Years will only be eligible for admissions to 3rd year. The professional years only have one start session, which is September. Students admitted to the Professional Years are not able to start in any other session.
  • Fulfillment of the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.
  • Overall GPA, individual grades in SWRK courses, and the online supplemental application will be considered.
  • There will be an optional voluntary equity declaration as part of the online application.
  • Students who are admitted on a full-time basis to the Professional Years of the BSW Program must complete the professional requirements over two consecutive years (4 terms). Part-time students must complete the program over two and a half consecutive years (6 terms.)
  • Placements may be a driving distance of an hour or more from home campus. Students are expected to provide their own transportation to and from the placement setting.
