We understand that applying to the Professional Years can feel complex, overwhelming, or intimidating.
The following Frequently Asked Questions are designed to help clarify the process and support you as you prepare your application.
How competitive is the program?
We typically receive fewer than 100 applications for the 60 full-time spaces each year. With the recent addition of a part-time study option, additional spaces are now available in the Professional Years.
I have a diploma or degree in a related discipline. Am I eligible for advanced standing or direct admission to the Professional Years?
No - advanced standing and direct admission to the Social Work Professional Years are not offered at this time.
I am taking courses in the summer. Am I still eligible to apply for the Professional Years starting in September?
All academic requirements must be completed by May 15th of the year of application. Courses taken during the summer session will not be considered as part of the admissions process.
When do the BSW Professional Years start? Can I begin in January, or during the summer term?
The Professional Years begin in September only. There are no other entry points.
Is it possible to complete the BSW Professional Years part-time?
Yes! Students who have received transfer credit for SWRK 3000Y are eligible to apply for the part-time study option.
- Part-time spaces are limited to 10 per campus.
- The same application is used for both full-time and part-time study options.
Can I apply to both the Peterborough and Durham campuses?
Yes! Applicants may select one of the following options when completing their application:
- Peterborough campus only;
- Durham campus only;
- Either campus (preference for Peterborough); or,
- Either campus (preference for Durham).
Selecting "either campus" increases the likelihood of receiving an offer. Students must attend their assigned campus for all required Professional Years courses. All decisions are final.
How is the academic component of my application assessed?
Applicants must achieve a minimum grade of 70% in each of the following courses:
- SWRK 1000H (or transfer credit pass)
- SWRK 1001H (or transfer credit pass)
- SWRK 2001H
- SWRK 2004H
Applicants must also meet all Year 1 and Year 2 academic requirements, as outlined in the Academic Calendar under Social Work. A total of 10.0 credits will be used to calculate the cumulative grade point average (minimum 70%).
For students with transfer credits, the cumulative average will be calculated using the remaining numeric Trent grades only.
Can I apply to the Professional Years more than once?
Yes! If you previously applied and were not offered admission, you may reapply in a future cycle. All applicants must submit a new online application and pay the application fee again.
If I am not admitted to the Professional Years, what are my options?
You may continue your studies at Trent in a different undergraduate program. After graduation, you may consider applying to:
A one-year post-degree BSW
A two-year Master of Social Work (MSW)
