Hours & Schedule

Field Education Practicum Hours

Trent Social Work placements are always concurrent placements (i.e. students complete placement three days a week and attend classes two days a week). Trent does not offer block (full time) placements or summer placements. Students typically complete 21 learning hours per week, including supervision. Lunch hours, statutory holidays, snow days, sick days, or other absences from the field setting are not included.

Students will generally attend field practicum on the designated days (Wednesday, Thursday, Friday) for 7 hours per day or 21 hours per week. Students are permitted to modify this schedule provided it doesn't conflict with classes and the agency approves it. While students are not scheduled to be in placement during evenings, weekends, and reading weeks, they may go into placement during these times. Students may not attend practicum when Trent University is closed (i.e. Statutory Holidays or during the Trent University Winter Closure).

Third Year Placement Schedule

Students complete third year placement from January 21st to April 10th for a minimum of 240 hours. Please see the schedule below for more detail.

Please note that third year students are required to attend a "Placement Prep Week" (a variety of placement orientation, workshops, and training sessions designed to help students prepare for placement), hosted by Trent's social work department on January 14th, 15th, and 16th. These hours (21 total) count towards the student's placement hours. If a student needs to attend placement during these dates (for time sensitive events) please let the Field Education Coordinator know so they can make arrangements with the students to ensure they receive the materials discussed in the Prep Week.

Fourth Year Placement Schedule

Students complete fourth year placement from September to April for a minimum of 460 hours. Please see the schedule below for more detail.
