News from the Trent University Board of Governors Meeting: October 13, 2017
The first regular meeting of the academic year for Trent University’s Board of Governors took place on Friday, October 13, 2017.
Trent University Signs on to Unity Statement
The Executive Committee, on behalf of the Board of Governors, agreed to have Trent University sign the UNITY statement, including a preamble similar to the one used by the Peterborough Police Service.
Special Mentions
Stephen Kylie, chair of the Board of Governors, noted that governor Armand La Barge ’95 was recently recognized with the Canada 150 award for his volunteer work, years of public service and contributing to diversity, inclusivity and social justice.
Governor Garry Cubitt ’67, CAO of the Regional Municipality of Durham, was congratulated by the Board on the Trent Distinguished alumni award to be presented to him at the Jubilee Pavilion in Oshawa on October 18, 2017.
President’s Report
In his report to the Board, Dr. Leo Groarke highlighted Trent’ success in the rankings, including its ranking for the seventh year in a row as the #1 undergraduate university in Ontario – and a move up to #3 in Canada according to the Maclean’s university rankings. He also mentioned Trent’s move up to the top 3.4% of universities worldwide by the Canadian World University rankings and Trent’s place as the only Canadian primarily undergraduate university to make the list in the National Taiwan University Ranking.
Enrolment Report
In his remarks, the President highlighted recent enrolment trends at the University. Trent has led the province for the second year in a row for percentage increase in applications and led the province in 2017 for accepts, or first-year confirmations. Where the provincial system has increased by 2.1% for fall 2017 overall, Trent University’s first-year confirmations increased by 18.2% in the year-over-year data from the Ontario Universities Application Centre. Official fall enrolment counts are official in November.
Student Centre Opening
Following the Grand Opening Celebration of the new Student Centre on the University’s Symons Campus on September 29, the Board received a report that confirmed the well-received new building achieved full occupancy October 16, 2017.
