University of Medicine and Health Sciences (St. Kitts) Pathway

Study medicine in a tropical paradise. Practice medicine in Canada, the US or beyond.

To help give aspiring doctors a clearer path to realizing their dreams, Trent University has created an international partnership with the University of Medicine and Health Sciences (UMHS), one of the foremost medical schools in the Caribbean, located on the beautiful island of St. Kitts.

UMHS is committed to providing a personalized medical education for each student. With smaller class sizes (8:1 student to faculty ratio), you can make the most of UMHS’s advanced facilities and experience a truly hands-on approach to their medical education.

Whether you attain residency in the United States (US) or Canada, either path allows Canadian students to become fully licensed physicians in Canada.

How it works

Students in Trent’s Medical Professional Stream (MPS) receive the direction and assistance they need to prepare for medical school. By successfully completing the MPS program, you could prequalify for conditional acceptance to UMHS.

The Trent/UMHS Advantage

Choose your perfect residency, with more than 36,000 positions available in Canada and the U.S.

Benefit from UMHS’s small class sizes, renowned faculty and one of the most technologically-advanced campuses in the Caribbean

Complete a semester in Portland, Maine preparing for the United States Licensing Exams (Step 1) with Kaplan

Upon completion of the fifth semester in Maine, students will complete clinical rotations across the US, Canada and Puerto Rico.

UMHS provides Canadian students with access to residency programs in both Canada and the United States.

Qualify to become a fully licensed physician in Canada after completion

Trinity School of Medicine (Saint Vincent and the Grenadines) Pathway

During your undergraduate degree, complete a funded mini-clerkship at a teaching hospital in Georgia and clinical rotations in the US and Canada.

When your dream is to become a doctor, it’s important to choose a medical school that gives you options. The partnership between Trent University and Trinity Medical Sciences University (TMSU) gives Medical Professional Stream students an edge in pursuing their Doctor of Medicine amongst the tranquil beaches of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and opportunities to train and complete residencies in the United States and Canada.

Trinity’s accreditation with CAAM-HP, the leading accrediting authority for Caribbean medical schools, qualifies graduates to enter the U.S. and Canadian residency match processes and to become licensed to practice in any U.S. state or Canadian province. Because of Trinity’s low student-to-faculty ratio, early clinical experience, and world-class clerkships, graduates have achieved an all-time 90.4% residency placement rate.

How it works

Students who are serious about pursuing a career in medicine are encouraged to enroll in Trent’s Medical Professional Stream (MPS), where you will receive the direction and assistance they need to prepare for medical school.  By successfully completing the MPS program, students prequalify for conditional acceptance to Trinity’s Doctor of Medicine program.

Once accepted at TMSU, students spend the first two years involved in comprehensive study, including clinical experience.  By the third year, students at Trinity participate in clerkships in the United States, where they gain hands-on learning treating patients in several areas of medicine.

The Trent/Trinity Advantage

During undergraduate studies, students in the Medical Professional Stream have the opportunity to complete a fully funded mini-clerkship at Trinity’s clinical facilities in Warner Robins, Georgia. During this mini-clerkship, students will get an insider’s look at what it’s like to be a Trinity student going through term 5 and clinical rotations.

Smaller class sizes

Generous scholarships: those who attain a score of 490-494 on their MCATs will receive a bursary of $25,000 USD, while students scoring 500 will receive $35,000 USD

At Trinity, clinical experience begins in the first term as MD students, and continue throughout your training

Globalize your M.D. by getting experience and practice in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, the US and Canada

Clinical and residency opportunities across North America

Successful graduates of the program are qualified to complete their residencies and write their licensure exams in the US or Canada, giving them the ability to practice in either country upon completion of their residencies

Program & Admission Requirements

Students must have 90 credit hours of undergraduate coursework or equivalent to 15 credits in Trent University standards, with a concentration of courses in the sciences (biology, chemistry and biochemistry)

Students should have a 77% cumulative grade average

A minimum MCAT score of 490 as a qualifying score. Lower scores will be considered on a case by case basis
