Trent University Welcomes Award-Winning Writer and Performer Alison Wearing as 2015 Writer in Residence March 22-27
Residency features public performance, community reading, theatre and writing workshops
Continuing in the tradition of bringing talented Canadian authors to interact with the Trent and Peterborough communities, Trent University and Champlain College are pleased to announce award-winning writer and performer Alison Wearing will be delivering a series of public and events at Trent from March 22 to 27 as the 2015 writer in residence.
Ms. Wearing's first book was the internationally acclaimed travel memoir, Honeymoon in Purdah: an Iranian Journey. Her most recent work, Confessions of a Fairy's Daughter is both a bestselling memoir and an award-winning one-woman play. Born and raised in Peterborough, Ontario and now living in Stratford, Ms. Wearing performs, teaches and speaks across North America.
"Champlain College is thrilled to be hosting Alison Wearing as our 2015 Writer in Residence. Her long history with the College and her ties to Peterborough and Trent University make her a natural fit for the role," said Melanie Sedge, head of Champlain College. "I hope that as many students as possible, as well as the local community, will take the opportunity to engage with Alison while she is here and take advantage of the unique experience with writing, gender topics and performance art.
Highlights of Ms. Wearing's week as writer in residence include:
- Theatre Workshop for students: "Creating & Touring a One-Person-Show" - Monday, March 23, 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Champlain Living Learning Commons
- Public Reading of her anticipated upcoming novel Dancing with the Filth Goddess - Tuesday, March 24, at 7:00 p.m., Junior Common Room, Scott House, Traill College. Admission is free. Reception at the Trend to follow.
- Writing Workshop for students: "Memoir Writing with host Professor Rob Winger" - Wednesday, March 25, 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Champlain Living Learning Commons
- Public Performance: "Confessions of a Fairy's Daughter" - Thursday, March 26 at 8:00 p.m., Nozhem: First Peoples Performance Space, Gzowski College. The event is free and tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis at the Champlain College Office, CC 202 or at the door.
About the Writer in Residence Program
Over the years several well-known and influential writers have stayed in Champlain College to meet with students and give lectures about their work and life as a professional writer. Past writers in residence at Trent University include: Joseph Boyden, Linwood Barclay, Kelley Armstrong, Michael Johansen, and others.
