In an effort to mobilize knowledge, provide support and bring optimism to our communities, Trent University is launching Trent Talks, an open, free, online learning series offering reliable and thought-provoking information about the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.

Trent Talks will address relevant and timely subjects, including: helping parents with home education, family and marital dynamics, rural and aging populations, remaining resilient, health and wellness, and much more.

Chancellor and alumnus Stephen Stohn ’66 will host the series, sitting down with Trent experts each week to explore the challenges and solutions of COVID-19. Dr. Stohn, a respected entertainment lawyer and executive producer of the Degrassi television franchise, says he is says he is looking forward to the ways that Trent Talks will build connection in a time of physical distancing.

“I am pleased Trent University is providing access to faculty and alumni experts through the Trent Talks learning series,” said Dr. Stohn. “These interactive discussions aim to provide answers to help us all navigate this pandemic, as well as share some practical information and strategies for today, and optimism and hope for tomorrow.”

The first episode of Trent Talks, Hacking the Pandemic, will go live Wednesday, April 22 at 12:00 p.m. EDT. Trent University professors Dr. Craig Brunetti and Dr. Kirsten Woodend will be discussing what COVID-19 is, and what our communities can expect to see over the coming weeks and months.

Professor Brunetti, dean of Trent School of Graduate Studies and associate professor in Biology, is a virologist whose research focuses on molecular virology and viral pathogenesis. Professor Woodend, dean of Trent/Fleming School of Nursing, is an epidemiologist who studies public health issues like disease outbreaks, chronic disease management, and health systems.

“The Trent Talks video series aims to be responsive to the community’s need for up-to-date information, resources and thought leadership about the COVID-19 pandemic, and the many interconnected issues that come with it,” said Julie Davis, vice-president, External Relations & Advancement. “Trent’s faculty and alumni experts are at the forefront of industry-leading knowledge, and we want to ensure this information is accessible to everyone.”

Each week, the host and panelists will discuss audience-submitted questions related to the episode’s topic. All members of the public are welcome to participate and are invited to submit comments and questions for each episode via social media using #TrentTalks, or through the website trentu.ca/TrentTalks.

Future topics include: learning at home, managing mental health, supporting family dynamics in close quarters, and more.
