Master of Education Alumni Turns Learning into Leadership
Kaviq Kaluraq '04 shares perspectives on critical thinking and the lasting influence of her graduate degree
Kaviq Kaluraq ‘04 (Otonabee College), a Master of Education and Environmental Science graduate of Trent University, is the recent recipient of the Master of Education Outstanding Indigenous Scholar Award. Currently the vice-president at Nunavut Arctic College, Kaviq is recognized for her exceptional commitment to Indigenous education, research and community engagement.
The award highlights her contributions to Indigenizing elementary life science education in Nunavut, including developing Inuktut-language curriculum grounded in storytelling and culturally responsive approaches to science learning. As VP, Kaviq advances this work by integrating Indigenous knowledge into public systems across Nunavut, including impact assessment and postsecondary education.
“One of the things I think that Trent gave me that I carry today is a sense of independence in terms of my growth and my thinking,” says Kaviq.
