Grad Students at the Helm of Historic Shipwreck Excavation
An unexpected opportunity for hands-on learning as students help uncover a 19th-century schooner on Lake Huron
Two Trent University Anthropology grad students, Hailey Sterling and Lorna Miessner, are playing a key role in the excavation of a shipwreck discovered on a Lake Huron beach by 10-year-old Lucas Atchison in 2023. Hailey and Lorna are working alongside volunteers from the Ontario Marine Heritage Committee to document the wreck at Point Farms Provincial Park, north of Goderich, Ontario.
The shipwreck, believed to be a schooner, possibly the St. Anthony which sank in 1856, was first uncovered when Lucas found metal spikes with his metal detector. The expert team, featuring a marine archaeologist, marine historian and the Trent graduate students, will excavate the ship and then rebury it to preserve its structure for another 50 years.
