From Belize to the Classroom, Olivia Molica Lazzaro’s Journey from Trent University Durham GTA to Teaching Success

Olivia Molica Lazzaro ’17 celebrates walking across the stage during her convocation ceremony.

A graduate of Trent University Durham Greater Toronto Area’s Psychology and Anthropology program, Olivia Molica Lazzaro’17 applies her experiences from Trent in her role as a teacher within the Durham Catholic District School Board. The critical thinking and collaborative skills she honed at Trent are integral to her work in the classroom.

When Olivia first started at Trent University Durham as a Psychology major in 2017, she had no idea the experiences that awaited her in the field of Anthropology.

After exploring elective options in various disciplines, Olivia discovered her love of Anthropology, where she had the opportunity to travel to a dig site in Belize to work alongside Dr. Helen Haines, director of the Ka’Kabish Archeological Research Project and professor at Trent Durham.

After graduating with a double major in Psychology and Anthropology in 2021, and inspired by her work in Belize, Olivia continued her post graduate education at Trent, later completing her Master’s degree in Anthropology in 2023.

Olivia credits connections made, and mentorship received at Trent Durham with her early success in being approached for prestigious research projects, study abroad opportunities, and teaching assistant experience.

“Having these experiences also provided me with a strong resume, which has led me to competitive job opportunities and offers after graduation. The skills and knowledge I acquired through these roles not only made me a more attractive candidate but also boosted my confidence in my abilities,” Olivia said.

Olivia chose Trent Durham because of the small class sizes and comforting atmosphere. It’s a place where she felt she could fully immerse herself in the community to building lasting relationships with her peers and professors.

“I would recommend Trent University to any student looking to build a university experience beyond academics. Trent is an excellent choice for anyone considering a university with multiple work, research, and volunteer opportunities. The professors are always eager to take on students, and due to the smaller class sizes, it feels less intimidating to ask for research opportunities or references when they know and recognize you personally.”
