Campers from Brazil, Panama, and Peru treated to truly Canadian experience at two-week Trent International camps

High school students from Latin America had the opportunity to experience the true essence of Canada at Trent’s GOOSE International Youth Camp, a thrilling two-week summer adventure on the University’s picturesque Symons Campus, featuring practical workshops, and seminars as well as quintessentially Canadian outdoor activities like swimming and canoeing.

“At GOOSE Camp, we celebrate the richness of globalized perspectives,” says Glenda Fish, the Trent-ESL operations and academic manager. “Witnessing campers and staff from different parts of the world come together and share their diverse backgrounds and experiences is truly inspiring. Through this enriching camp experience, we foster a deep understanding of cultures, languages, and ways of thinking, empowering our campers to become knowledgeable and compassionate global citizens. We believe that these connections and experiences will not only enhance their educational journey but also shape their future as they embark on a path of open-mindedness and international collaboration.”

Beyond the fun and games, GOOSE Camp provides an environment for intercultural exchange, allowing campers to learn from one another and form lasting bonds with fellow campers and the University. Fish said that GOOSE's unique University-Bound (U-Bound) program fosters experiential learning in a range of academic program areas at Trent. Campers experience university programs through hands-on activities and potentially discover their future academic path. The camp also provides students with a chance to explore their interests and strengths, discover future possibilities, and strengthen their English proficiency. And trips to Niagara Falls, the Peterborough Zoo, and Canada's Wonderland showcased the beauty of Canada, complemented by a range of classes that reinforced their skills, preferences, and English language abilities.

Experiencing the Trent difference through the Colleges at Trent

During their stay at the University, campers were granted a unique opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the essence of a collegiate university experience, residing in and engaging with Champlain College, one of Trent's five colleges.

“Welcoming these campers into our college and giving them a taste of the Trent experience is incredibly valuable. It allows them to connect with student leaders and gain a firsthand understanding of the supportive community that awaits them at Trent,” said Tina Fridgen, principal of Champlain College.

As the home of Trent International, Champlain College proved to be the ideal setting for these campers to acquaint themselves with many of the essential supports and resources that will contribute to their academic success if they decide to return to Trent as future students.
