Third-year student Rebecca MacNeil gets hands on training in medicine during mini-clerkship at Trinity Medical Sciences University in Georgia, US.

Rebecca MacNeil always dreamed of a career in medicine. Recently the third-year Kinesiology student made strides towards her goals by getting hands-on training in a simulation lab at Trinity Medical Sciences University in Georgia, US.

Rebecca’s training was part of a mini-clerkship opportunity offered to med-school bound student ambassadors in Trent’s Medical Professional Stream (MPS) through a partnership with the Trinity School of Medicine.

“I really wanted to be an ambassador after the first information session and suture clinic that the MPS program hosted for visiting Trinity representatives,” said Rebecca. “I was really impressed by the whole presentation.”

The MPS is a support program that Trent students can complete alongside their undergraduate degree, receiving guidance and support from faculty and staff at the University as well as partnering institutions, while accessing unique learning opportunities like the international clerkship.

International Healthcare Education & Experience

During the mini-clerkship, Rebecca toured medical facilities, sat in on lectures, and participated in discussions and medical skill labs. Rebecca says that attending the clerkship in Georgia gave her valuable exposure to the profession and the confidence to pursue medical school outside of Canada.

“Through all of this, I was really exposed to the accessibility and benefits of continuing your education in a country outside of Canada,” Rebecca said.

Getting Medical Experience

In addition to being an MPS student, Rebecca is a member of the Trent University Emergency First Response Team (TUEFRT) and is taking advantage of all opportunities and support available at Trent to prepare for a future career in healthcare.

“I feel like Trent is preparing me to be a great doctor by providing amazing opportunities like the Medical Professional Stream which works alongside my degree, the Pre-Med Society, and having an emergency first response team right on campus,” said Rebecca.

Going into her final year, Rebecca is looking to continue her role as a shift lead for TUEFRT, an event medic, and be an ambassador for the Trinity School of Medicine. Rebecca will also continue as president of the Trent University ringette team and as an Orientation Week leader.

Rebecca will continue to fuel her ambitions for a career in medicine through the MPS, getting dedicated support and guidance on her medical school applications this year. This support, combined with the rest of her experience, may earn her an edge in getting into medical school either in Canada or abroad at one of Trent’s medical school partners.
