Appreciate Nature in Real Time with the Trent Osprey Cam

Live stream now available of feathered friends nesting on Trent’s Peterborough campus

Ever wondered what it’s like to be a bird of prey? Trent’s new Osprey Cam, allows you to catch a glimpse into the life of a pair of ospreys currently nesting in Justin Chiu Stadium.

Like most great ideas, Trent’s new Osprey Cam started with a lightbulb moment. A lightbulb high on the pole where the osprey nest is located needed to be changed, andMr. Martin Kennaley, Trent’s Facilities manager came up with the bright idea to install a camera to benefit the Trent community.

You can now check in on the growing family of ospreys living on Trent’s campus: two ospreys and their eggs.

Jason Allen, manager of Animal Care at Trent, hopes the new Osprey cam will encourage people to learn more about their natural environment.

“I hope people get a deeper understanding and appreciation of nature from watching the cam,” said Mr. Allen. “I hope viewers find some comfort watching the birds go through some very real struggles. If we log-in to see the birds find the strength to keep trying in hard times, maybe we will be encouraged to do the same.”

From eating prey to seeing eggs hatch later this spring, the Trent Osprey Cam will stream live raw, unfiltered natural behaviours. A few lucky viewers may even catch the chicks take their first steps out of the nest and fly for the first time once hatched in July.

The installation of the Osprey cam was made possible with support of private donors, as well as contributions from a variety of Trent departments including Animal Care, Biology, Facilities, Information Technology, and the Trent School of the Environment, as well as a year of fundraising efforts from the Biology Undergraduate Society,

Watch the Osprey Cam to check in on our feathered friends.
