President Groarke Explores Partnership Opportunities at University of Trento, Italy

There is only an “o” that separates “Trent” and “Trento,” but there is a whole ocean between Trent University and the University of Trento, Italy.  While speaking at a conference at the Faculty of Law at the University of Trento, Trent’s president and vice-chancellor, Dr. Leo Groarke, met with University of Trento president, Paolo Collini. They discovered some significant similarities between both institutions, and a mutual interest in internationalization.

Beyond the obvious similarity in their names, University of Trento is a young university comparable in size to Trent. Like Trent, Trento enjoys a spectacular location – in its case in the mountains, just two hours from Venice at the beginnings of the Alps.

The conversation between the presidents turned to questions about potential collaborations. “We’re both interested in international partnerships,” said President Groarke.  “This could include student exchanges, collaborative research, and even joint programs. What is possible will depend on the interest of students and faculty.”

Both presidents agreed to continue the conversation, with a possible visit by President Collini on a future trip to North America.

Michael Allcott, director of Trent’s International Program notes that Trent University is committed to continued internationalization. “Europe remains a priority destination for Trent students pursuing study abroad,” said Mr. Allcott. “Trent currently has no institutional partner in Italy. Partnerships that meet student demand for quality education abroad that is in harmony with their academic requirements are a part of Trent's commitment to experiential education. Partnerships that grow out of mutual faculty and research collaboration ensure meaningful exchange.”

There have been students from more than 100 different countries through the international program since Trent’s founding with over 600 international students at Trent currently.
