Trent University and its students are active members of the Peterborough and Durham regions, supporting the cultural, environmental and economic vitality of the regions in which the University operates. While some areas of our relationships with Peterborough and Durham may be hard to quantify, Trent’s economic impact is now an estimated $678.8 million in the Peterborough and Durham regions annually, an increase of $177.8 million from 2016, according to the 2020 Trent University Economic Impact Report.

This is one important indicator of success which helps us help our host communities,” said Dr. Leo Groarke, president and vice-chancellor. “Through employment, student and faculty research, employee volunteerism and student employment, Trent is deeply connected to the Peterborough and Durham communities. Key findings in the report include:

• Trent’s economic activities represent about 9% of the total economic activity in the Peterborough area
• 6,135 total jobs supported, directly and indirectly
• Trent students have an estimated economic impact of $322 million annually
• Trent students work 2.2 million part time paid hours during the academic year
• 75% of students come to Trent from outside the Peterborough and Durham regions
• Trent alumni provide labour worth more than $3 billion annually in the greater region

Of particular note is the growth of the Durham GTA campus, including the growing student population and the addition of a new student residence on campus. The total economic impact associated with Trent’s Durham campus is estimated to be $77 million, which represents the equivalent of 700 jobs. Trent Durham students contribute more than $42 million annually.
