Graduates earn both B.Sc. and B.Eng. in just four years through Trent University partnership with Swansea University in the U.K.

Students will be able to take advantage of learning on both sides of the Atlantic as a pioneering partnership between Trent University and Swansea University in the UK creates an innovative new career-focused Chemical Engineering Dual Degree.

Applications are currently being accepted for a September 2019 launch of the dynamic new dual degree, which will allow students to graduate with both a B.Sc. in Chemistry from Trent University and a B.Eng. in Chemical Engineering from Swansea in just four years – half the time it would normally take to complete two degrees. With work-integrated learning, students have a pathway to becoming a professional engineer.

“This innovative new program is another example that showcases Trent’s commitment to providing students with significant, meaningful educational experiences that go beyond the ordinary in preparing them for success,” said Dr. Leo Groarke, president and vice-chancellor of Trent University. “It’s exciting to be building upon our strong partnership with Swansea University and together creating opportunities that provide students interested in engineering with the ability to take on a dual degree while enhancing their education with a global experience.”

Swansea University’s academic lead on the project, Professor Cris Arnold, from the College of Engineering, said the dual degree offers exciting opportunities for students: “The aim of this program is to produce qualified engineers who are also scientists with international experience. Not only will the students travel, live and study for a significant period in another country but they will also have the opportunity of undertaking placements that will contribute towards professional engineer status in Canada.”

In the program, students will spend their first two years studying Chemistry at Trent, gaining experience in modern experimental and theoretical chemistry, while using Trent’s world-class lab and instrumentation facilities. From there, they travel to Swansea’s picturesque seaside campus to complete a Chemical Engineering degree at one of the top 10 engineering schools in the UK.

Work integrated learning opportunities are key to the program. While at Trent, students can identify and participate in relevant summer work opportunities – and between third and fourth year, students will be able to complete a summer engineering internship, either in the UK, back in Canada, or internationally. Additionally, students may wish to add a fifth-year to the program by applying to complete a career-boosting competitive 12-month ‘Year In Industry’ work placement in the U.K. With the required work experience, graduates of the program can go on to become qualified as professional engineers.

To support students in the dual degree program, and in addition to entrance scholarships available through Trent for students in the first two years, Trent students moving on to study at Swansea University automatically qualify for an entrance bursary of £3,000.00 for both their third and fourth years of study.

Students of the dual degree program are also eligible to transfer to Swansea University’s Master of Engineering (M.Eng) program to further enhance their employability after graduation.

The latest collaboration between the two institutions follows the development of a dual Trent/Swansea Law & Arts/Law & Business degree, launched in 2016.
