Kaitlyn Mowat, Environmental and Life Sciences M.Sc.

Kaitlyn Mowat

“The opportunities and support I was given throughout my undergraduate degree, much of it thanks to donors, helped give me the confidence to apply for my M.Sc. in Environmental and Life Sciences. I am very grateful to Trent’s amazing family of donors for supporting my academic aspirations.”

Kaitlyn Mowat, M.Sc. student in the Environmental and Life Sciences graduate program at Trent and a Trent student experience ambassador, is also the recipient of the BMO Future Leader Entrance Scholarship as well as the Academic Excellence Undergraduate Scholarship.

With plans to pursue a career in Environmental and Life Sciences, Ms. Mowat’s academic research focuses on the intestinal parasite, Giardia intestinalis, which leads to the disease known commonly as “beaver fever”. Currently the medications targeted against this parasite are very ineffective and have also been shown to have harmful effects on developing fetuses. Her goal is to identify a protein which could be a potential target for new therapies. Beyond academics Ms. Mowat is the financial coordinator for the “Symons Series,” a graduate symposium showcasing student research that provides networking opportunities for students and staff.
