First-year Trent University student, Maddie Trottier, has been recognized for her achievements as a young environmental steward, winning the 2014 James S. Miller Memorial Scholarship from Forests Ontario in partnership with the Algoma Envirothon program.

Ms. Trottier was presented with the scholarship earlier today at a special presentation at Trent University, attended by Forests Ontario CEO Rob Keen and Dr. Stephen Bocking, chair of the Environmental and Resource Studies/Science program at Trent.

“Growing up in northern Ontario, I’ve always had an interest in nature, which I’ve expressed through national science fairs, OMNRF volunteering, and Ontario Envirothon competitions among many other things,” said Ms. Trottier. “Entering the academic world of Trent University, I look forward to all the opportunities available, and hope that I can use my passion for the natural world to make a difference in the years to come.”

A graduate of W.C. Eaket Secondary School in Blind River, Ontario, Ms. Trottier is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Archaeology at Trent University. Having served as a team leader for the past four years with Ontario Envirothon, Ms. Trottier has displayed a keen interest in natural resources. Over the past several years, she has also volunteered her time to environmental causes, working as an assistant to a Fish and Wildlife Biologist at the Ministry of Natural Resources and acting as a youth representative for the East Algoma Stewardship Council.

“Forests Ontario is thrilled to recognize Maddie Trottier by way of the James S. Miller Memorial Scholarship,” said Mr. Keen. “Maddie has demonstrated a commitment to ongoing environmental stewardship and has displayed the spirit and passion for nature that is reminiscent of Jim Miller. Maddie’s decision to pursue education in natural resources is a decision to protect our natural resources for future generations.”

The James S. Miller Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to a student in Ontario who intends to pursue post-secondary education in natural resources or a related field. Recipients are students in a graduating year from a high school in northern Ontario, entering the first year of a full time post-secondary program in natural resources. The scholarship acknowledges the great contributions made by its namesake, James S. Miller, who worked in various aspects of forestry for the Ministry of Natural Resources. Miller, an avid outdoorsman, environmental steward, and proponent of youth education, passed away in 2007.

Mr. Miller’s belief in the importance of forestry to present and future generations is reflected in the awarding committee’s selection decision to recognize students with a dedication to environmental pursuits. As such, students must demonstrate a commitment to stewardship of natural resources and appreciation of the environment through participation in Envirothon, outdoor education programs, volunteer programs or other related activities.
