For the aspiring doctor and veterinarian, Trent University has partnered with St. George’s University in Grenada, West Indies to provide students with the unique opportunity to graduate from Trent and qualify for direct entry into St. George’s School of Medicine or School of Veterinary Medicine.

The first pathway of its kind with any institution in Ontario, the agreement between Trent University and St. George’s University provides future doctors and veterinarians with the opportunity to begin their journey to medical or veterinary school at Trent, where they’ll spend four years completing an undergraduate degree in the program of their choice as part of the new Medical Professional Stream (MPS). Upon graduation, students who meet the requirements of the pathway will travel to the oceanfront campus of St. George’s University in Grenada, West Indies where they will qualify for direct entry into the University’s renowned schools of medicine and veterinary medicine. 

“Challenge the way you think – and in this case about entry into medical or veterinary school. North American and Caribbean Medical Schools are less interested in what students’ degree major is, successful entry relies on much more than top grades. This has led to Trent University’s unique MPS,” explains Dr. David A. Ellis, acting dean of Arts and Science, Science at Trent University, and coordinator of the MPS. “The offering is designed to ride alongside a four-year degree in any discipline. It strives to help students obtain required co-curricular and extracurricular breadth and depth through experiential learning and research while also engaging with our community. It also provides students with assistance in the often lengthy and arduous application process itself. These aspects of the MPS program have been recognized by St. George’s University. As a result, students who successfully complete the MPS will receive priority entry into their medical school or veterinary school.”

While studying at St. George’s, medical students will have the option to either spend their first two years studying in Grenada, or take advantage of the opportunity to complete their first year at Northumbria University in the Keith B. Taylor Global Scholars Program in the UK, then travel to Grenada for their second year of study. For their final two years of the medical program, students will complete their clinical rotations at hospitals in the US, UK or in Canada. Many students have taken advantage of the affiliation St. George’s has with Vancouver General Hospital to complete an elective in Family Medicine or Psychiatry, adding to the more than 300 electives successfully completed by SGU students in hospitals throughout Canada in the past few years. Successful graduates of the St. George’s University medical school are qualified to write their US and Canadian license exams, and typically complete residencies in the US, Canada or the UK.

Students in the School of Veterinary Medicine will complete their first three years of study at St. George’s University, then spend their final clinical year at affiliated veterinary schools in the US, UK, Canada, Australia or Ireland. Successful graduates of the St. George’s School of Veterinary Medicine are eligible to sit the North American Veterinary Licensing Exam to become licensed to practice in either Canada or the US.
