Trent Gears Up to Contribute to a Better Planet

Annual BBQ and bike tune-up supports alternative transportation

The Trent community is no stranger to a vast array of green initiatives practiced on campus, including the annual Shifting Gears event. Shifting Gears, a month-long campaign which is hosted annually at Trent, encourages those working at the Peterborough campus to leave their cars at home throughout the month of May and use sustainable ways to get to work such as walking, cycling, bussing and car-pooling.

On Friday May 13, 2016, members of the Trent community gathered on the lawn of Lady Eaton College for a BBQ and free bike tune-up from partner, Wild Rock Outfitters, as part of the campaign, which is in its 10th year.

“We have had over 40 bikes come in today, instead of cars,” says Richard Morgan, Associate vice-president of Development at Trent. “I think the broader commitment to sustainable forms of living, including transportation, resonates with the values and culture of the university.”

This year, the Trent Athletics Centre is contributing to the campaign by providing access to towels and shower service throughout the month of May with a donation to their Share Fund, which supports healthy active children through the Trent Excalibur Kids Camp.
