Trent University’s Great Hall in Champlain College was transformed into a volunteer food packaging centre on Tuesday, January 19 as over 150 Trent students partnered with students from Fleming College and high school students from a local Christian Academy to package over 14,200 meals for victims of the devastating earthquake in Haiti.

“We are called to care for our sisters and brothers as members of the human family throughout the world especially those in greatest need such as the people of Port-au-Prince and its region in Haiti,” said Reverend Glenn Empey, spiritual affairs coordinator at Trent, who helped to organize the event with Kids Against Hunger Canada.

Teams of students worked at several stations in the Great Hall measuring out soy mix, dried vegetables, chicken stock and rice into packages that each weigh about 395 grams and contain ample food for well-balanced, nutritious meals. The 14,256 individual meals that were packaged will feed two people three meals each.

The packages will be shipped by bulk container to arrive in Haiti within two weeks by which time the port and roads will again be accessible.
