Trent University’s Board of Governors, at its October 3 meeting, provided the go-ahead for University administration and the Trent Central Student Association to plan a competitive architect selection process for the new Student Centre.

Planned for Symons Campus on the West Bank between Bata Library and the Athletics Centre, the Student Centre will provide critically needed space for students to study, access services, organize clubs and group activities, initiate new ventures, and more.

“The Student Centre is an important initiative that will provide students with long-awaited flexible, student-run space,” said Braden Freer president of the Trent Central Student Association (TCSA). “This is a unique opportunity for students to be creative and work collaboratively to develop the initiatives that matter most to us. The possibilities are exciting and I am particularly enthusiastic about the opportunities for student leadership development.”

“A new Student Centre will place the University among its peer institutions nationally in student life and development,” said Dr. Leo Groarke, president and vice-chancellor of Trent University. “Setting these crucial steps in place during Trent’s 50th anniversary year is a meaningful milestone. I am pleased for the students that we have arrived at this point and congratulate them on their foresight in supporting this initiative. ”

The concept of the new Student Centre was initiated by the TCSA with the support of students. Planning for the selection of an architect through a Request for Proposals is an early step in the process toward full approval.
