Trent University’s Department of Athletics and Recreation celebrated student athletic achievement at an Athletic Awards Ceremony, held in the Great Hall at Champlain College last night.

Student athletes Evan Fleming and Stephanie Tabbert were awarded the Arthur Cup, the University’s most prestigious award for graduates who have demonstrated outstanding contribution, sportsmanship, participation, and leadership in the athletic programs.

Evan Fleming, who will graduate this June with a degree in Education, has been a member and leader of the varsity men’s rowing team for five years. Mr. Fleming, who hails from Stirling, Ontario, has also been an active participant, referee and convenor with the University’s Campus Recreation programs. Last year, he was awarded a University Athletic Award at the annual awards ceremony.

Stephanie Tabbert, from Pembroke, Ontario, has been a member of the varsity women’s rowing team for the past three years and has devoted countless hours to Trent Athletics. Ms. Tabbert will graduate this June with a degree in Biology and Psychology and will continue her educational experience at the Chiropractic College in Toronto.

In presenting the award, Athletic director Bill Byrick stated, “Both Evan and Steph have become synonymous with the athletic programs at Trent. By being a part of both the Athletic Advisory Committee and Varsity Athlete Committee, they have taken on numerous leadership roles and are wonderful role models for their peers. They embody the spirit of this award, and have earned the respect and admiration of students, coaches and staff."

Another prestigious award, the Gary Wolff Leadership Award, was presented to Virginia Portmann of Milton, Ontario, in recognition of her leadership with the women’s fencing team. The award is presented each year to a student athlete who has demonstrated determination and leadership through balancing sport, community involvement and academic performance. This award was established by the Trent University Alumni Association in June 2002 to commemorate the service of Gary Wolff, chair of the Board of Governors from 1997 to 2002.

In addition, the following students were honoured with the University Athletic Award, presented to third- and fourth-year students who have demonstrated a significant contribution to the varsity and campus recreation programs:

Joshua Bean – Peterborough
As captain of the varsity men’s lacrosse team, Joshua Bean is recognized for being a vocal leader both on and off the field. He is a gifted athlete both offensively and defensively.

Sean Beech – Stratford
A dedicated member of the varsity men’s soccer team, Sean Beech is recognized for his skill, dedication, and for the motivation he provides to his fellow players.

Ian Rettie – Newmarket
A leader in team points, Ian Rettie filled the role of setter and rightside during the first half of the season on the varsity men’s volleyball team.

Lianne Schumacher – Lakefield
As a member of the varsity women’s rugby team, Lianne Schumacher is honoured this year with an OUA All-Star Award and has set a new Trent record for most tries in one game.

Tyson Shennett – Orillia
A significant contributor to the Trent Athletics Community, Tyson Shennett captained the Men’s Foil Fencing team and captained Campus Recreation hockey, soccer and ultimate risbee teams.

Wesley Sutherland – Ottawa
A highly-decorated member of the varsity men’s volleyball team, Wesley Sutherland is recognized as an exceptional leader on and off the court by his fellow volleyball players.

Scott Takala – Sydenham
As captain of the varsity cross country team, Scott Takala overcame injury this year to take part in the Canadian Intercollegiate Sports cross country championships.

Julia Weagle – Ottawa
As a member of the varsity women’s curling team, Julia Weagle changed positions this year to help her team finish in the “final four” and qualify for the OUA Provincial Championships.

Pamela Wright – Beeton
As member of the varsity women’s rugby team, Pamela Wright held the position of President of the Trent Women’s Rugby Club. Her hard work and dedication paid off in a large way this year as her team placed 4th in the OUA.
