University Winter Shutdown

Most University academic and administrative operations will close by 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 23, 2008 and will remain closed throughout the holiday period, reopening at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, January 5, 2009.

Please note that the Athletics Centre will remain operational on a special holiday schedule, which can be found here.

During this holiday season, the student services listed below will begin holiday shutdown at the following times (all reopening on January 5, 2009).

  • The Bata Library will close at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 23, 2008
  • Disability Services will close at 4:30 p.m. on Monday December 22, 2008
  • Health Services will close at 12:00 noon on Friday, December 19, 2008
  • Housing Services will close at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 23, 2008. Dons will be available in residence until Sunday, December 21, 2008
  • The Counselling Centre will close at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, December 19, 2008

Risk Management & Security Operations

Campus Security will remain on duty 24/7 throughout the shutdown. All building exterior doors, labs and classrooms will remain locked during the holiday shutdown.

If it is necessary for you to work alone at the University during this period, we request that you check in with Campus Security so that we know you are on campus in the event of an emergency. For your safety, the Security Officer will be happy to check in on you, either in person or by phone, on a mutually agreeable schedule.

During the shutdown, please ensure that all windows and doors are closed and secure, and that any valuables are stored out of view.

Please note that: Security will not unlock or provide access to buildings, labs, offices etc, unless the individual has made prior arrangements by having the department head contact Security with written authorization (e-mail).

Physical Resources Operations

No Physical Resources Department staff will be at work during the winter holiday shutdown except those manning the Stanley Adamson Powerhouse.

Only in the event that emergency vehicles need assistance to access the campus, or in the case of a heavy snowfall or freezing rain will Grounds staff be called-in.

Building heating systems will be set back, and most lighting will remain off to conserve energy.

A PRD on-call maintenance technician will be available 24/7 to respond to any building emergencies that arise during the break. Emergencies would normally be situations such as power outages, frozen or broken plumbing systems, fire alarm activation, etc.

PRD FixIt (fixit@trentu.ca, 748-1366) will be closed for the shutdown.

Building emergencies are to be reported to the on-duty Security Officer by calling 748-1333.

Information Technology Operations

All computing, telephone and network systems will remain operational during the shutdown, with the following exception:

Science Complex north wing will be undergoing network maintenance beginning on Monday, December 29 at 8:00 a.m., to be completed by Wednesday, December 31 at 8:00 a.m. During this outage, TrentNet and Internet access will be unavailable in the Science Complex north wing. Please refer to the Trent IT website for additional details and up-to-date information.

The Technical Support Centre (it@trentu.ca 748-1010) will be closed, however the Request Tracker system will continue to accept your e-mail service requests which will be prioritized and actioned when IT staff members return in January.

Any non-core service failures during the shutdown will be repaired when IT staff return in January.

IT will have staff on-call for emergency response to repair only essential core University services such as a major failure of the campus telephone, network or e-mail systems. Telephone, network and computer emergencies are to be reported to the on-duty security officer by calling 748-1333.

During the Winter Holiday Shutdown, report all emergency situations to
Campus Security at 748-1333.
