Making Strides Episode 2: Is Democracy Working?

Rethinking political leadership and participation in a changing world

Democracy in Canada is at a crossroads. Trust in political leaders and institutions is declining, with just 22% of Canadians saying they believe political parties will do what’s right. Voter turnout was declining for decades until the 2025 federal election, and misinformation and polarization are reshaping how we engage with politics and one another. As public confidence wavers, Dr. Cris de Clercy talks to President Bruce about the need for accountable, responsive leadership, driven by enhanced youth civic engagement.

Leadership & Democracy Lab

A cornerstone of Professor de Clercy’s Jarislowsky Chair program is her Leadership and Democracy Lab. Founded in 2012 and being brought life in the new Create Centre for Entrepreneurship, the Lab conducts research and case studies to produce political risk and economic analysis reports for global organizations. Students gain valuable hands-on experience to prepare them for their careers, and learn insights on political changes, regional trends, and leadership shifts.
