Electronic Travel Authorization
Learn about the Electronic Travel Authorization, including eligibility, fees, and automatic renewal.
What is an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)?

An Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is an entry requirement for foreign nationals who are visa-exempt and travelling to Canada by air. An eTA is electronically linked to your passport and is valid for up to five years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.

Do I require an eTA?

Visa-exempt foreign nationals need an eTA to fly to or transit through a Canadian airport. These travellers do not need an eTA when arriving by car, bus, train or boat (including a cruise ship).

How to apply for an eTA

International students will obtain an eTA automatically once their initial study permit application is approved. If you apply to extend your study permit and your application is approved, a renewed eTA be issued automatically.

International students who do not require a study permit may require an eTA to enter Canada. Applying for an eTA is a simple online process. To complete the application process, you will need a valid passport, a valid email address, and an acceptable method of payment to pay the $7 CAD application fee.

You can verify the validity of your eTA on the IRCC website.
