Study Permits
Learn more about study permit conditions, eligibility, applications and extensions.
What is a study permit?

A study permit is status document issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) which allows foreign nationals to temporarily reside in Canada and study at designated learning institutions (DLIs) in Canada. Most foreign nationals require a valid study permit to study in Canada.

Study permits are not entry documents, meaning they do not authorize entry into Canada. A temporary resident visa (TRV) or an electronic travel authorization (eTA) are entry documents that authorize entry or re-entry into Canada.

Who requires a study permit?

All international students coming to study in Canada in programs longer than six months, must have a study permit. Post-graduation work permit (PGWP) holders may study in programs of up to six months without a study permit, if your program ends before your work permit expires.

The IRCC recommends all international students get a study permit, even if you do not need one. One benefit to this is that study permit holders can extend your stay or apply for a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) from within Canada.

Study Permit conditions

Study permit holders are required to meet certain conditions to keep their status valid. If these conditions are not met, you may lose your student status and be directed to leave Canada. Non-compliance with study permit conditions may also result in the refusal of future study permit extension applications or a work permit application.
